Especially in recent months, in the light of the pandemic. Many companies are dealing with\u00a0<strong>remote contacts<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>overproduction<\/strong>\u00a0and the adoption of\u00a0<strong>digital tools<\/strong>\u00a0in order to continue their business.<\/p><p>Digital Transformation,\u00a0 however, goes beyond the introduction of new technologies, leading rather to a total rethinking of the organisation and posing more\u00a0<strong>cultural<\/strong>\u00a0than technological challenges.<\/p><p>In the following paragraphs, we will analyse the meaning and impact of digital transformation and what scenarios and challenges lie ahead for the\u00a0<strong>Life Science<\/strong> businesses.<\/p><h2>Digital Transformation<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div><p>Digital Transformation has been talked about since the late 1990s, as an\u00a0<strong>approach\u00a0<\/strong>that involves the whole company and introduces changes in the business at a technological, cultural, organisational, social, creative and managerial level.<\/p><p>Digital Transformation encourages participants to\u00a0<strong>share<\/strong>, be\u00a0<strong>transparent<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>inclusive<\/strong>\u00a0in the process and places the recipient of the final service at the centre of the development, if not actually participating in it.<\/p><p>Digital Transformation is a &#8216;gateway&#8217; to the future and to maintaining\u00a0<strong>competitiveness\u00a0<\/strong>in the marketplace. Companies that have already implemented projects related to the use of new technologies achieve\u00a0&#8220;a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilsole24ore.com\/art\/il-digitale-e-prodotto-come-digital-transformation-migliora-redditivita-AEMxR2cF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">profitability that is 26% higher<\/a>\u00a0than other companies and a market value increase in the region of 12%&#8221;.<\/p><p>According to a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sap.com\/dmc\/exp\/4-ways-leaders-set-themselves-apart\/index.html\">SAP report<\/a>, most companies understand the importance of digital change, but\u00a0<strong>only 3%<\/strong>\u00a0have implemented digital transformation projects within the company.<\/p><p>Companies that are considered\u00a0<strong>l<\/strong><strong>eaders\u00a0<\/strong>in Digital Transformation have the following characteristics:<\/p><ul><li>they consider Digital Transformation to be at the very core of their business (96%) and technology as highly important for achieving a\u00a0<strong>competitive advantage<\/strong>\u00a0(93%). With this in mind, leaders are also rethinking their business models;<\/li><li>they prioritise customer contact activities. The\u00a0<strong>92% of leaders<\/strong>\u00a0in Digital Transformation have already set up strategies and processes for improving\u00a0<strong>customer experience. G<\/strong>enerally speaking, they consider the latter to be the gateway to successful digital transformation;<\/li><li>they invest heavily in digital\u00a0<strong>research and training<\/strong>\u00a0of employees, so as to be ready for change. The\u00a0<strong>71% of leaders<\/strong>\u00a0also state that investing in digital transformation makes it easier to\u00a0<strong>attract and retain talent<\/strong>;<\/li><li>they are built on a <strong>bimodal structure.<\/strong>\u00a0This is an organisational model that takes into account a company&#8217;s technological tradition and brings this element together with the more typically innovation-oriented aspects. This enables the business to be run efficiently while at the same time introducing new technologies to remain competitive, especially\u00a0<strong>Big Data<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Analytics\u00a0<\/strong>(94%),\u00a0<strong>Machine Learning<\/strong>\u00a0(50%) and\u00a0<strong>Internet of Things<\/strong>\u00a0(76%).<\/li><\/ul><h2>Departments that are most often digitised in the Life Sciences sector<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-image\">\u00a0<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-spacer\" aria-hidden=\"true\">Digital Transformation, as we have said, goes beyond the introduction of new technologies and leading rather to a total rethinking of the organisation and presenting companies with a major cultural challenge\u00a0<strong>cultural challenge<\/strong>. Digital Transformation places a company, a process or an operation within a larger ecosystem, where the \u00a0<strong>distances decrease<\/strong>\u00a0for faster, shared and more efficient delivery of results.<\/p><p>For Life Science companies in particular, being part of a digital ecosystem implies easier communication and sharing of data, extending from\u00a0<strong>regulating bodies<\/strong>\u00a0right up to the patient.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-image\">\u00a0<\/p><p>Of great interest in this respect is a\u00a0study\u00a0conducted by\u00a0<strong>KPGM<\/strong>\u00a0on digitisation within the Life Science businesses of Germany, Switzerland and Austria. The research looked at 75 companies, including pharmaceutical, medtech and other Life Science companies.\u00a0<\/p><p>The departments with the greatest digitisation are IT and\u00a0<strong>Quality Assurance<\/strong>. Quality Assurance is also the area where most digitisation projects are planned. The areas least affected at the time of the research were logistics and production. Although in recent months, there has been a sharp increase in interest and projects in these areas.<\/p><p>Just the increase in\u00a0<strong>efficiency<\/strong> is, according to the research, one of the major benefits of deploying digital technologies, including the agile design of R&amp;D processes (39%). Closely followed by the advantage of optimising Quality &amp; Compliance processes (28%).<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p><h2>Efficient internal processes and an agile approach<\/h2><p>\u00a0<\/p><div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-primary-letter-spacing );\">Efficient internal processes are a prerequisite for companies that want to embark on Digital Transformation and play an important role in the<\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-primary-letter-spacing );\">digital ecosystem<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: var( --e-global-color-text ); letter-spacing: var( --e-global-typography-primary-letter-spacing );\">.<\/span><\/div><p>Before implementing a technological solution, it is advisable to reflect on our own\u00a0<strong>internal processes<\/strong>. How they can be simplified. Only then should we ask how a digital tool can fit in. Without this prerequisite, there is a risk that instead of increasing productivity, the technologies will lead to further wasted time for the staff using them.<\/p><p>Another issue to consider is\u00a0<strong>transversal collaboration<\/strong>\u00a0with internal and external stakeholders who will make use of the technology, even if not managing it directly. The advice is to involve them and create cross-functional teams within the company and the group to jointly evaluate and test the new technology, the impacts it will have and how to manage them.<\/p><p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrike.com\/project-management-guide\/faq\/what-is-agile-methodology-in-project-management\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">agile approach<\/a>\u00a0can help with tackling the uncertainty of a new technology and the change it entails, as it allows the best solution to be implemented gradually while making quick decisions.\u00a0 The agile approach involves setting up working groups that are horizontal to the organisation&#8217;s hierarchy for rapid prototyping and testing of the best solutions.<\/p><h2>Culture and digital skills<\/h2><div class=\"wp-block-spacer\" style=\"height: 50px;\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\u00a0<\/div><p>Amongst the biggest challenges for more than<strong>80% of Life Science companies<\/strong>\u00a0(KPGM report), are the lack of digital skills and acceptance of new technologies on the part of employees.<\/p><p>The introduction of new technologies might in fact be\u00a0 seen as replacing human activities with the consequent risk of job losses. Therefore, fear of this may lead, consciously or unconsciously, to employees&#8217; resistance to change. If this is the case, management should intercept the fear and convey the message that Digital Transformation is an opportunity to increase one&#8217;s skills, remain competitive in the labour market and have the opportunity of changing a repetitive job for a more valuable one within the company.<\/p><p>Companies often employ\u00a0<strong>coaches<\/strong>\u00a0to help them establish a culture of digital change.<\/p><p>When it comes to\u00a0<strong>lack of digital skills<\/strong>, many companies have undertaken to retrain their employees. Starting with an assessment, they have provided personalised routes for digital growth. Training of this kind certainly involves a significant investment. Many companies in KPMG&#8217;s research expressed considerable doubt about their ability to develop such skills.<\/p><p>In this respect, a critical parameter in the digital transformation process is a clear definition of the qualified employee profile that will be required in the future.
